We're Building the Riverfront West Central Indiana Deserves

The Wabash River runs through the heart of our region, but for decades it's been overlooked, underutilized, and fragmented by disconnected development. Riverscape exists to change that; by coordinating the people, projects, and resources needed to turn miles of riverfront into a connected asset that drives economic growth, protects critical ecosystems, and belongs to everyone.

Our Mission

To advance, transform and safeguard the Wabash River and riverfront in Terre Haute and Vigo County, Indiana.

Our Vision

For Terre Haute and Vigo County to be the most vibrant, beautiful and prosperous riverfront

community in Indiana.

Our purpose

To be the connecting link and to work collaboratively with community members, government officials, non-profit organizations, business leaders and property owners.

Our Values

Advocate and lead

We serve as the primary voice for the development and revitalization of the Wabash River corridor. By championing the Riverfront Master Plan, we lead strategic efforts to secure funding, influence policy, and ensure the river remains a top priority for regional growth and urban renewal.

Promote and Educate
We believe the river is our region’s greatest natural asset. Through community initiatives and digital outreach, we share the rich history of the Wabash while highlighting its modern potential. Our goal is to inspire residents and visitors to see the river not just as a boundary, but as a destination for recreation and discovery.

Protect and Preserve
Sustainability is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to the environmental stewardship of the Riverfront, Wabashiki Wetlands, and our local trail systems. By promoting conservation and responsible land use, we ensure that the natural beauty and ecological health of the riverfront are protected for future generations.

Collaborate and Partner
True transformation requires a collective effort. We act as the bridge between local government, business leaders, and the community. By fostering strong partnerships, we align resources and passion to turn ambitious visions into a tangible reality for everyone.

HOW RIVERSCAPE STARTED

For years, people across the Wabash Valley shared the same frustration: we have this incredible natural asset running through our region, and we're barely using it.

Municipalities planned riverfront projects in isolation. Trails ended abruptly at jurisdictional boundaries. Development happened without considering environmental impact or public access. Conservation efforts lacked coordination. The result was a riverfront that worked for no one, not residents, not businesses, not the river itself.

In 2008, community leaders, conservationists, business owners, and public officials came together with a simple but ambitious goal: create a unified vision for the entire Wabash River corridor in West Central Indiana.

That collaboration led to the formation of Wabash Valley Riverscape and the development of a comprehensive master plan built on months of public input, technical analysis, and regional coordination.

The result? A roadmap that's already guiding real progress, new trail connections, protected habitat zones, strategic riverfront development, and partnerships that align public and private investment.

Riverscape doesn't replace local governments or existing organizations. We work alongside them, filling the critical gap between individual projects and regional coordination. We're the connective tissue that makes sure everyone's moving in the same direction

Who Leads This Work

Riverscape is governed by a board of directors representing diverse perspectives across the Wabash Valley. Their experience brings municipal leaders, business owners, conservation advocates, recreation enthusiasts, and community stakeholders together to ensure our progress is grounded and sustainable.

This cross-sector leadership ensures our work reflects the full range of priorities that matter to the region: economic vitality, environmental protection, public health, and equitable access.
